1.Since you are at your first interview on this site, why don't you tell our readers when and how you started your journey in the underground world?
Beside the mainstream music there has always been something like a niche for great rockin' bands. One of them is King's X - a band that never became very famous but always filled the venues and made the crowd getting crazy. That status of a band we wanted to achieve. Sloppy Joe’s started when we first met in 2011 and realized that we have that common goal of making music.
2. What genres and bands is the group influenced by?
All three members (Jesse Garon (Vocals, Guitar), Johnny Angel (Bass), Pätzy Dävey (Drums)) played in their own bands of different musical genres before. We have roots in rock’n’roll, soul, heavy metal, progressive rock and punk. Our musical influences/inspirations are hard rock bands like KISS, AC/DC, Iron Maiden and more: Just bands that can still conquer the world. These bands are very focused on delivering a big live rock show. That’s what we do as well.
3. I know it might not be easy to do, but could you comment on your latest work?
Yes, our latest work is a Live EP called "Live in Hamburg (Vol.1)" that will be released on Oct 28. During the pandemic we took the time to listen to some previous concert recordings. Two concerts in our hometown Hamburg have been recorded professionally: the concert for the album release of "Eight Reasons To Rock" (2016) at the sold-out Knust and our release show for the long player "Devil's Music" (2019) at Indra Musikclub. We compiled The best tracks from both concerts put them on the EP. These songs perfectly capture the atmosphere of a Sloppy Joe's concert. It was produced in the highest audio resolution and gives you the feeling of being there live when you listen to it.
4.The underground metal scene is undoubtedly inflated by many groups, so (often) it is necessary to present compositions that stand out in the chaos of the various musical scenes. Do you think your songs have something more to say or different from what has already been said in the crowded metal world?
In our opinion there is only one metal/rock scene. Just take a look at some headbanger's metal vests: There are patches of different bands and different styles. We don't think that it's important to define what sounds different. It matters what sounds good for you. And if you like it, listen to it. Don't tell anybody not to listen to anything. That's metal!
5.What do you think of the national underground scene?
In Germany we have a lot of small underground venues that try to survive after the pandemic. Many people still think that's is more comfortable to stay at home instead of attending at a live concert. All these venues especially in the underground scene need our support.
6. The career of a musical group (however short it may be) is always studded with more or less positive events. What would you like to erase and what will you always remember from your group experience, from the very beginning until now?
We would not erase anything because all the expereinces we have made (good and bad ones) made us grow as a band. One example: 6 years ago we had a concert in Switzerland with only one person in the audience, but we took the challenge and gave this dude the show of his life. That's something we will always remember as well as some sold out shows in Hamburg.
7. How do you judge the Internet vehicle for promoting the music scene?
The internet is very helpful to reach new audiences but it's also very aggressive and dangerous in some cases. When you post a lie in the social media it can turn into a shitstrom and harm other people without clarification whether your words are true or not.
8.Since we are talking about it .... how many original CDs do you buy each month? And how many do you listen to?
Well, I (Jesse Garon) prefer Vinyls. I buy 2 - 3 original Vinyl per month. Most of them I already have as CD, but I want to have the full Vinly Backkatalog of my music library.
9.What does your group want to do when they grow up?
We will never grow up. That's Rock'n'Roll!
10.Okay, guys! The space at our disposal is about to run out, but I want to give you carte blanche for the last message. The word is yours, you are free to express yourselves!
It's not easy for bands like us to survive at these times. So please support your local bands. Go to concerts, help the venues to be alive and never stop rockin'! Thank you in advance
Bure sure to check their new single "Get In The Ring" that will be out on the 21th of october!
